Indonesian fried rice – Nasi Goreng

I’m not really into the real Dutch cooking. We call it the ‘Hollandse pot’ and it includes all the old fashioned Dutch cooking like stamppot (potatoes and vegetables mashed together) and cooked potatoes, vegetables and meat. Not really exciting and new.

But a ‘couple’ of years ago there was a Dutch colony in Indonesia. So in the Netherlands this Indonesian food is now also part of the ‘Hollandse pot’. Unlike a lot of other Dutchies I don’t have grandparents who grew up in this colony. My family isn’t familiar with Indonesian food but I know one thing for sure: I like it a lot! I even have some Indonesian cookbooks (although at this moment they are still in one of our moving boxes somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean).

Nasi Goreng P2

This rice dish was called ‘nasi’ at our house but now I’ve learned that nasi is just plain rice so fried rice is called ‘nasi goreng’. My mother used to make it out of a spice packet from the supermarket. For years now I’m making this recipe from scratch. Much better!

Indonesian fried rice – Nasi Goreng

My version of the Dutch nasi goreng. Hmmm it smells good & it reminds me of home.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown rice (200 gr)
  • 3.5 oz bacon, in cubes (100 gr)
  • 6 oz ground beef (170 gr)
  • 1 onion, coarsely chopped
  • 2 garlic gloves, finely chopped
  • 1 large leek, washed and sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, cleaned and sliced (250 gr)
  • 5 oz green beans (150 gr)
  • 3 tbsp Kecap manis
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 level tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric

Instructions

  1. Cook the rice according to the instructions.
  2. Wash and chop all the veggies (don't wash the mushrooms though! You need to brush the dirt off) and if desired, parboil the green beans.
  3. Grab a big wok and stir-fry the bacon without oil (!!) until the fat is coming out.
  4. Add the beef to the wok and stir-fry it in the bacon fat. Break up large lumps with a wooden spoon.
  5. When the beef turns brown: add the onion and garlic and stir-fry for another 2 minutes until tender.
  6. Add the leek, mushrooms and green beans and stir-fry until tender.
  7. Mix in the kecap manis together with the cumin, coriander, ginger and turmeric.
  8. Keep mixing until the veggies and meat is coated in the delicious spices.
  9. Stir in the cooked rice and stir-fry for another minutes.
  10. Serve with some home made peanut sauce and some spicy sambal.

Notes

Want a spicier Nasi Goreng? Add some red pepper together with the onion and garlic. You can also stir in some sambal at the end.

  1. Hi Ellen, nice to know you. I think your indonesian nasi goreng version is using too much spice that never use in nasi goreng. Just Fyi the original version is more simple. You need garlic, shallot, chili (if you like spicy ), salt, white pepper, ketjap manis(sweet soybean paste), and of course rice ( better using leftover rice). For the protein you can use egg, bacon, meatball, chicken, or another meat or no meat if you are vegetatian. For the vegetables usually leeks, green mustard, green onion etc ( flexible). Sometimes we mix the rice and noodle it called nasi goreng mawut. Because the idea in nasi goreng is using the leftover ingredient. Hope you can try it.😊😊😊
